Initially, Sculptra® was employed to minimise facial lipoathrophy of HIV-positive patients on anti-retroviral therapy. In the USA, Sculptra® was approved for the treatment of lipoathrophy by the FDA in 2004 and subsequently for its aesthetic use in 2009. Current study provides information referring to its augmenting effect, and discusses injection techniques and product dilutions, in order to optimise the aesthetic benefit and minimise adverse reactions. The augmenting effect of Sculptra® can last for more than 2 years.
Sculptra is a type of dermal filler that is used to reduce wrinkles, restore facial volume, and boost new collagen production in the face and body. It is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic material that is gradually absorbed over time. Sculptra works by encouraging the body to create new collagen, which helps to restore volume and improve the appearance of wrinkles and folds. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic polymer that serves as a catalyst that simulates the process of neocollagenesis and causes immediate effect on the physically occupied scape. The working mechanism of the (PLLA) is completely different from the other products for soft tissue augmentation. It produces effects that are long-lasting but not permanent. Sculptra is a great solution for the face because it stimulates natural collagen, adds volume, and improves skin quality. It can be injected into areas of the face such as the chin, wrinkles, jowls, neck, and mid-face to create beautiful cheekbone or cheek enhancement. Sculptra can also be used to rejuvenate other parts of the body such as the décolletage, chest, neck, hip dips, hands, upper arms, sagging knees, and buttocks. Sculptra improves skin irregularity and texture, helping to reduce or eliminate cellulite and stretch marks.
Sculptra and hyaluronic acid are both dermal fillers used to reduce the prominence of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable product that is made of Poly-L Lactic Acid (PLLA) that works to stimulate the body’s own natural collagen. The microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid jumpstart the body’s production of collagen, which gradually improves collagen levels in the weeks after the appointment. Increasing collagen levels will restore lost volume to the face, making wrinkles and lines appear less prominent and noticeable. Sculptra is a more natural treatment than dermal fillers, and the results typically last 2-4 years. On the other hand, hyaluronic acid is a major contributor to the extracellular matrix of the dermis, and hyaluronic acid-derived products have been extensively investigated as injectable dermal supplements. The principal drawback with purified hyaluronic acid dermal filler is the short half-life of hyaluronic acid in the dermis, estimated at 24–48 hours. Because of their limited half-life, most patients require at least twice-yearly injections of chemically-modified hyaluronic acid products. Some studies have documented histologic evidence of the in vivo longevity or adverse reactions to chemically-modified hyaluronic acid dermal injections in humans. Adverse reactions to hyaluronic acid-derived dermal fillers have been reported, including scar sarcoidosis after hyaluronic acid injection. In terms of longevity, Sculptra lasts longer than hyaluronic acid fillers. The majority of reports on the longevity of Sculptra are based on physician observation, either directly or by means of examination of 2-dimensional photographs and patient satisfaction surveys. Using these methods, duration of effect has been demonstrated for at least 2 years. A study conducted on Sculptra Aesthetic showed that the maximal volume gain from Sculptra Aesthetic was observed at 6 months after the third injection, and the volume gain was maintained for up to 25 months after the first injection.
